Google Business Profile Optimization: The Complete Local Playbook

Claiming your Google Business Profile is step one. Optimizing it is what actually ranks you in the map pack. Here's the full playbook — categories, NAP, posts, and the 90-day timeline.

Google Business Profile Optimization: The Complete Local Playbook — local seo guide for local contractors

Claimed Does Not Mean Optimized

Most contractors we audit have claimed their Google Business Profile. They verified the postcard, filled in the business name, added a phone number, and never touched it again. That's the equivalent of buying a truck and never putting tools in it.

Claiming is step one. Optimization — the right categories, consistent citations, active posts, real photos, and answered Q&As — is what actually moves you up the map pack. A half-completed profile ranks exactly where you'd expect: behind the competitors who did the work.

The Categories That Matter Most

Your primary category is the single biggest ranking factor on your Google Business Profile. A plumber who selects 'Plumber' as their primary category will rank differently than one who selects 'Plumbing contractor' or 'Drainage service.' The category determines which searches you appear for.

Secondary categories expand your visibility without diluting it. An HVAC contractor might have 'HVAC contractor' as primary and 'Air conditioning repair service,' 'Heating contractor,' and 'Furnace repair service' as secondaries. The key is choosing categories that match what customers actually search for — not what sounds impressive.

NAP Consistency Across the Web

NAP — Name, Address, Phone — needs to be identical everywhere it appears online: your website, your Google Business Profile, Yelp, Yellow Pages, Facebook, Apple Maps, and every local directory. Even small variations (a suite number missing on one site, a different phone format on another) confuse Google's entity matching and drag down your local ranking.

This is tedious, unglamorous work, which is why most contractors skip it. But cleaning up NAP inconsistencies across 30+ directories is often the difference between page two and the map pack. We've seen HVAC contractors jump from position #8 to #1 in 90 days largely through citation cleanup alone.

Posts, Photos, and Q&A

Google rewards active profiles. Weekly posts (service updates, seasonal offers, completed job photos) signal that your business is operational and engaged. Real photos of your team, your trucks, and completed work build trust with both Google and potential customers.

The Q&A section is underrated. Seeding common questions — 'Do you offer emergency service?' 'What areas do you cover?' — with clear, keyword-rich answers helps you rank for long-tail searches and gives callers the information they need before they pick up the phone.

The Realistic Timeline

Optimization shows signal in 2–4 weeks — you'll see impressions and profile views tick up. Meaningful map-pack movement typically compounds over 60–90 days as Google re-indexes your profile, processes citation updates, and compares you against competitors.

This isn't instant, but it's durable. Unlike paid ads that stop the moment you stop paying, a well-optimized Google Business Profile keeps generating free calls month after month. Our Google Business Profile & Search service handles the full optimization — categories, citations, posts, and monthly reporting — so you can focus on the jobs.
